This is my most recent book.
Here is a brief overview of the story.
It is a time of peace several years after an intergalactic war that spanned three decades. Siri Gili, a retired military officer sets out to adapt to the discomfort of civilian life after a long career in the very structured and highly disciplined life he had in the military. He was honored to have been in command of an elite military unit that was instrumental in their victory over a bloodthirsty humanoid race of marauders known as the Karta’n.
Dealing with the pitfalls of life, in his own unique way, Siri fights through the problems and forces the events to follow the agenda that he and Nathaniel had planned.
Then, just when things seem to be going in the right direction, Siri is confronted and imprisoned by his old nemesis, the leader of the Karta’n named Jotil. After an unplanned rescue, Siri receives information of Jotil’s intentions and escapes to relay that information to his former commanding officer, Admiral Loran. What is done with that information may affect the fate of their entire solar system.
READER COMMENTS ABOUT ONCE UPON A TIME: RETRIBUTION
Jack Roberts, radio host at Cable Radio Network in Los Angeles comments: “Jack Lawrence has authored a fascinating and enthralling science fiction yarn in his new book. I could not put this book down…I was up until past midnight last night to finish it.”
Colorado Springs ophthalmological assistant Theresa Herbert declares, “What I liked about ONCE UPON A TIME was how it kept hold of my attention. It was a very easy read and took me to another very interesting place for a while. I am not much of a sci-fi reader, but I enjoyed this one very much.”
As The Beacon Turns
is a soapy, sappy, burlesque about general aviation.
George heard the radio in the front office squawk. …Tower this is Beech November, Four, One, Four, Victor, Tango (N414VT) declaring an emergency… Every FBO on the little municipal airport where George worked had at least one radio tuned to the Control Tower’s frequency if for no other reason than to receive calls that could end up in a crash. George, more concerned with lending aid rather than seeing the carnage, jumped to his feet, ran out of the office and sprinted towards the runway. Aiming to stop just short of the taxiway that ran alongside the landing strip, George noticed the crowds were already gathering. People he hadn’t seen in months were all filing out to watch some poor SOB burn it in and try to profit from his crash.
Within moments, the usual ticker tape parade was in full swing. Confetti flew so thick that the runway was partially obscured. Hot dog and balloon vendors were marching back and forth calling out their prices. T-shirts of the type of aircraft were being noisily sold to George’s left. Another fellow was selling a complete record of the conversation between the pilot and the tower. One fellow pushed past George with a soft drinks cart shouting to the looming masses.
George saw a friend of his. “Brian.” he shouted.
A short and stout young man with long hair tied in a ponytail turned around. He scanned side to side until he saw George. He smiled and yelled back, “Hey dude,” and made his way over to where George was standing. “Got another Forked Tailed Doctor Killer commin in. Hopefully there’ll be a gnarly crash this time.” Brian smiled wildly.
George said, “Damn dude you’re a psycho. You really want to see someone burn it in? What if it was a friend of yours?”
“I’m not a psycho.” Brian shouted, “Say that again and I’m gonna kill you.” He then laughed like a maniac and moved back to the front of the crowd.
“There it is.” Someone shouted.
George turned his attention to the approach end of the field. He could just make out the shape of a Beech V33 Bonanza. There was obviously a problem. The little plane was yawing back and forth and pitching up and down. George thought he could see smoke coming from it as well, but that could’ve just been his imagination.
The crowd grew silent as the little plane descended. It hit hard and violently, bounced back up into the air. Some one yelled, “holy Shit!!” as the aircraft dipped back towards the runway; the right wing raised and the nose pitched down. The left wing dragged on the runway forcing the little plane to spin. The rest of the plane hit the runway and it bounced again and immediately did a cartwheel. Slammed back down on the runway, started sliding and then burst into flames. George heard Brian Yell, “That’s awesome. Yeah!”
The plane slid to a halt, the pilot side door flew open and the pilot jumped from the burning wreck. He hit the ground running and dove for the ditch on the side of the runway just as the V-tailed Beech erupted into an enormous fireball. That brought more whoops and hollers from Brian as well as a few of the other spectators.
Fire trucks raced to the scene and quickly extinguished the flames. George watched as Paramedics were checking the pilot for damage. After the fire was put out, one of the firemen waved to a wrecker that began making its way out onto the runway to tow the charred remains of a once magnificent aircraft off the field.
Realizing the end was near, the crowd began dwindling as each of the spectators headed back to their perspective hangars. George stood amongst the debris watching until the last of the show was over. He was relieved to see that the pilot was not seriously injured. “Any landing you can walk away from…” he quietly said.
Stuffing his hands into his pockets, George turned around and headed back to Alan Aviation’s office and the three new Private Pilot students who would be eagerly, awaiting their first day of ground school.
